Last Performance of The Rake’s Progress This Weekend

The Princeton Festival will present the last performance of the opera The Rake’s Progress this Sunday at 3 p.m. at McCarter Theatre.

Written by Igor Stravinsky,  the libretto is by W.H. Auden and Chester Kallman. The performance in Princeton has receive rave reviews from several critics, including Anthony Tommasini of the New York Times.

The Rake’s Progress is about the decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, who deserts Anne Trulove for the delights of London in the company of Nick Shadow, who turns out to be the devil. After several misadventures, all initiated by the devious shadow, Rakewell ends up in Bedlam, a psychiatric hospital south of London.

Founded in 2004, The Princeton Festival offers a variety of performing arts productions to audiences of all ages in central New Jersey during the summer.

This year The Princeton Festival was one of 24 organizations to receive a grant  from The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey, a foundation created by Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey to support the promotion of health and the arts throughout New Jersey.  The festival received $10,000 from Horizon and is supported by various other organizations and individuals.
