The Princeton Area Girl Scouts had a chance to chat with the legendary Dr. Jane Goodall Monday when she visited the New Jersey State Theatre in New Brunswick.

Goodall, considered the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees, is best known for her 45-year study of social and family interactions among chimpanzees in Tanzania. A United Nations Messenger of Peace, she is the founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and has worked extensively on conservation and animal welfare issues.

In 2011, more than 100 Princeton area Girl Scouts were awarded “Roots and Shoots” badges for completing the Roots and Shoots program founded by Goodall to engage and inspire young people to make the world a better place for all living creatures through community service projects. The Friends of Princeton Nursery Lands in Kingston partnered with the Girl Scouts for their project.

Goodall spoke at the theatre as part of the SmartTalk series featuring remarkable women. The scouts were given compementary tickets to the event in recognition of their Roots and Shoots participation. The scouts presented Goodall with a commemorative 100th Anniversary Princeton Camporee bandanna and several varieties of their signature Girl Scout cookies.
