John Witherspoon Middle School Evacuated Because of Fire This Afternoon

Just after 2:30 p.m. today a fire broke out at the John Witherspoon Middle School, and students and employees were evacuated during the school’s eighth period.

The electrical panel fire was quickly put out, but because of the smoke in one wing of the building, school officials said they did not permit student to re-enter the building.

Students could not retrieve backpacks and other items and had to go home without them. School officials said students will be able to retrieve them first thing in the morning when the school reopens.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.

  1. i was in the spanish classroom diagonal from the panel and there was a loud bang, then it started sparking and went up in blue flames. The ceiling was also smoking. Before class i went down the stairwell right next to it and there was a man on a ladder trying to fix something in the ceiling, it turns out some 25 mins later this happens
