Planet Weekend Picks, Nov. 16-18

A 122-year tradition continues this weekend as the Princeton University Triangle Club performs at McCarter Theatre.

Friday, November 16

Give Thanks Yoga Workshop for Kids – Through yoga postures, kids will ‘play’ pilgrims, cross the ocean, ride horses, and discover the New World.  They will celebrate Thanksgiving with the American Indians, dance, sing, and be merry.  Together with a buddy, kids will invent ‘giving thanks’ poses to practice all-year around. Instructor Brigitte Aflalo-Calderon has been playing yoga with kids for 12 years.  She teaches in Montessori schools, nursery schools, and yoga studios. When she isn’t teaching, she is writing stories for kids magazines, 3:30 – 4:45 at Gratitude Yoga, 27 Witherspoon St., free.

Westminster Chamber Choir Concert – Works by Byrd, Dunstable, Tallis, Sheppard, and Weelkes. Amanda Quist at the Bristol Chapel at Westminster Choir College, 101 Walnut Lane in Princeton, 8 pm., tickets $20.

 

Suessical the Musical at Montgomery High

Seussical the Musical – The Sourland Hills Actors Guild presents a musical family show that follows the adventures of Horton the Elephant. Performance at Montgomery High School, 1016 Route 601, Skillman. Showing at 7 p.m. Friday,  2 p.m.and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets $13 at the door.

Triangle Club Presents `Tree’s Company (Forest’s a Crowd)’ – The famed musical-comedy troupe is back at McCarter Theatre for the world premiere of `Tree’s Company.’ Leave civilization behind and follow Princeton’s Famous Triangle Show into the great outdoors, where the only limits are your imagination and how well you can outrun a bear. A rollicking trip into the woods brings with it a raucous night of punch lines, puns, and jokes by the tons. Pack your hiking boots, a basket of goodies, and most importantly your first aid kit, ’cause Tree’s Company will leave you in stitches. Performances in Matthews Theatre Fri. and Sat., at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets $25 and up, student tickets $10.

`Der Bourgeois Bigwig’, Lewis Center for the Arts, Princeton University – World premiere of Moliere’s comedy translated and adapted by James Magruder. Princeton University Orchestra conducted by Michael Pratt. McCarter Theatre (Berlind), 8 p.m., tickets $15.

Saturday, November 16

The Princeton Research Symposium – This all-day symposium is free and open to the public and features 10-minute talks by Princeton graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who describe their work using everyday language rather than technical terms. Come for all or part of the day. Runs from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Friend Center the Princeton University campus. for more information visit www.princeton.edu/~prs.

YWCA Princeton Crafters’ Marketplace – Head over to the John Witherspoon School to do some holiday shopping and support a good cause. Work by 140 professional artisans from the Northeast on display, including original handmade jewelry, pottery, clothing and other gift items. Cafe lunch and homemade baked goods. Proceeds benefit the Pearl Bates Scholarship fund. No strollers. Handicapped-accessible. 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, admission $6.

9th Annual Conference for Gay-Straight Alliances –  New Jersey Statewide Gay Straight Alliance Forum conference for students, supporters and allies on creating an inclusive environment, Keynote by Ellen Sudow of the Southern Poverty Law Center. At West Windsor-Plainsboro High South, 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

West Windsor Community Farmers’ Market – Produce, flowers, handmade soaps, baked goods and more. At the Vaughn Drive Parking Lot at the Princeton Junction Train Station, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Art Exhibit at Cafe 44 – First day of the exhibit ‘Playback,’ an exhibit of studio paintings created by Jim Bongartz. Paintings on view until December 16. The cafe is located at 44 Leigh Avenue.

Screenings of `The Godfather’ and “The Godfather II’ –  It’s not personal, Sonny. It’s strictly business. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino star in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 classic about a powerful Mafia family, based on the novel by Mario Puzo. 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. in the Princeton Public Library community room, free.

Westminster Choir College Concert – An evening of classic and contemporary choral masterworks performed by Westminster choirs at Bristol Chapel, 1010 Walnut Lane in Princeton, tickets $20.

Sunday. November 18

Screenings of `Dog Day Afternoon’ and `Taxi Driver’ – Classic 70s Cinema Weekend at the Princeton Public Library capped off with `Taxi Driver.’ Robert De Niro stars as a New York cabbie who becomes obsessively involved with the city’s “night people” in this 1976 Martin Scorsese film. `Dog Day Afternoon’ at 11 a.m., `Taxi Driver’ at 4 p.m., both in the community room, free.

Dryden Ensemble performs at Princeton Theological Seminary – A concert of Baroque masterpieces at Miller Chapel, 3 p.m., tickets $35.
