Princeton Today: Concussions in Youth Sports

youth sports concussion helmetThe Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University are sponsoring a panel discussion tonight, Sept. 26, about concussions in youth sports as a public health concern. The panel, featuring  NFL Football Hall of Famer Harry Carson, will discuss the roles that media, legislation, neuroscience, and professional sports have on the future of youth sports.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium at the Woodrow Wilson School on Washington Road in Princeton. A public reception at 5 p.m. in Shultz Dining Room will precede the talk.  Registration is required and was still open as of early Friday morning.

Thomas Fleming Lecture “The Quest for Justice in the American Revolution” – This lecture,  sponsored by the NJ Humanities Council, Princeton Battlefield Society & the Princeton Public Library, is a part of the Princeton-Area Historic Sites’ NJ 350th Celebration. The lecture will kick-off  activities at the six historic sites, plus the Princeton University Art Museum. Thomas Fleming is one of the foremost historians of the American Revolution writing today. Fleming has won many awards and is a frequent guest on C-Span, the History Channel and PBS. He contributes regularly to American Heritage, Military History and Journal of Military History. 7 p.m., Princeton Public Library Community Room. Free.

Italian American Festival at Mercer County Park – Named one of New Jersey’s Best Fall Festivals by CBS New York, this annual celebration of Italian and Italian American Culture features a Food Piazza with more than 40 vendors including Italian restaurants; a wine and beer garden; two stages of continuous entertainment including Southside Johnny and The Poor Fools on Friday and Lou Christie on Saturday on the Investors Bank Stage; amusement rides; children’s activities; bocce; Fireworks on Friday; an Italian Market with contemporary and traditional Italian products; a Heritage Pavilion with art and memorabilia; and a Cultural Theater with guest speakers and cooking demonstrations.  3 p.m. to 11 p.m., Mercer County Park, 1678 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor. COMMUTE

In Princeton, topsoil and seeding are being installed along Mercer Road from the Lawrence Township line to Stony Brook Bridge this week. Work hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This work will take approximately 2 to 3 days to complete. Traffic will shift to one lane while the work is being completed. Expect delays.

The reconstruction and realignment of Route 518 between Canal Road and Route 27 began this week. The tentative schedule: Sept. 22 to Sept. 26th possible isolated utility work. Oct. 1 to Nov. 7th one lane closure with alternating traffic weekdays 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In Lawrence, Bakers Basin Road is scheduled to be closed to through traffic September 22 to September 26 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Milling and resurfacing work will continue on Pennington- Lawrenceville Road (County Route 546) from Federal City Road to U.S. Route 206. New Jersey American Water is reconstructing Route 206 between the Fackler Road Extension and Province Line Road as part of a water main project the company completed last year. The work is being done mostly from 9 .m. to 6 a.m.
