Witherspoon Street to Be Closed Again Due to Hospital Demolition Delays

avalon demolitionThe demolition of the main hospital building in downtown Princeton was not completed as scheduled, and Witherspoon Street is slated to close again for another four days beginning Wednesday, Jan. 21.

As of mid-afternoon yesterday, about 65 percent of the seven-story main building had been removed.

Equipment failures slowed the project down. The time estimations for the project also did not take into account how much time it would take for some of the tasks required to dismantle the building.

Witherspoon Street re-opened Monday night, Jan 19. AvalonBay will pay for a police officer to be on site today, Jan. 20, to make sure pedestrians do not walk on the Witherspoon Street side of the sidewalk near the hospital. The contractor that is demolishing the hospital buildings, Yannuzzi, will also barricade off the Witherspoon Street parking area along the hospital as an additional precaution.

Witherspoon Street will be closed again between Franklin Avenue and Birch Avenue on Jan. 21, 22, and 23rd between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The street will also be closed Saturday, Jan. 24, from 8 a.m. until dusk.
