Travel Ban Lifted, NJ Transit Rail Service Will Resume Tuesday Afternoon

SnowPlowGov. Chris Christie lifted the travel ban at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, but asked that residents stay home unless they must drive. The travel ban has also been lifted in New York City. New York City subway service resumed at 9 a.m.

New Jersey Transit trains has resumed operations after mandatory federal inspections. Trains are operating on a weekend schedule for the remainder of the day. Southern bus routes are operating with limited service, and northern bus routes are expected to resume service this afternoon. Northeast corridor service was restored after 10 a.m. and Dinky service was restored around noon.

As of 1 p.m. most local roads have been plowed, but area police report that many roads are still slippery. Residents are supposed to clear sidewalks within 24 hours of a storm in most municipalities. Parking restrictions remain in effect until 6 p.m. tonight in Princeton. Residents in Mercer County are reporting snowfall amounts ranging from three to six inches.

The Princeton Public Library will be closed today (update from earlier announcement that they would open at noon – reversed decision out of concern for safety of employees).

The Princeton YWCA is closed. The Princeton YMCA will open at 3 p.m. The wellness center and gymnasium will be available for use and the pool will have open swim hours until 8 p.m. No scheduled classes will take place and childcare services are not available

Note sent by the administrator for the town of Princeton at 9:40 a.m.:

“The Princeton Emergency Operations Center reported no storm related emergency calls for service during the overnight snow event.  Municipal officials will continue to monitor snow conditions during the National Weather Service’s winter weather warning which is expected to be lifted by 3 p. m. today. Municipal crews continue to conduct snow removal operations and will maintain operations to ensure all roadways are clear. Residents and business owners are reminded not to redeposit snow into the roadways by plowing and shoveling snow from walkways, driveways and sidewalks into the street.  These activities hinder the clearance of snow. Reminder Tuesday’s trash collection was rescheduled for Thursday, January 29.”

Schools

Princeton University  will resume normal operations at 5 p.m. today. Anyone driving to campus is asked to park in either the North or West garages so crews can continue clearing snow from surface parking lots.

Starting at 2 p.m., TigerTransit buses will run on a limited schedule through 11 p.m.

University libraries except Mudd Manuscript Library will be open, as will the Frist Campus Center and Whitman College dining hall. Athletic facilities including campus recreation facilities will be closed.

The Princeton Public Schools and the Princeton Charter School are closed Tuesday, as are all other public schools districts in Mercer County and Central New Jersey. Private Schools and private nursery schools will also be closed. If you know of an exceptions, let us know.

Government

All state and county offices are closed on Tuesday. Princeton and Lawrence municipal offices closed.

Princeton Municipal Court is closed on Tuesday.

Princeton trash collection scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 26, will be picked up of Thursday, Jan. 29.

All Princeton Municipal Court sessions scheduled for Tuesday,Jan, 27th, have been cancelled.

The Princeton Public Library will make an announcement about Tuesday as more information is known.

The Princeton Shade Tree Commission meeting scheduled for Jan. 27 has been cancelled.

Corner House offices will be closed Tuesday and all programs are cancelled.

All Mercer County nutrition Sites will be closed on Tuesday. No meals through the nutrition program will be served.

The Montgomery Senior Center will be closed and there will be no Meals on Wheels deliveries Tuesday.

In Lawrence, Tuesday’s garbage collection has been postponed and will be collected on Saturday, Jan. 30th.

Somerset Freeholders meting postponed and rescheduled for Thurs., Jan. 29 at 11:30 a.m.

Somerset County recycling pickups have been postponed for Tuesday, Jan. 27, and may be delayed the remainder of the week.

South Brunswick municipal building, court, senior center, library closed Tuesday.

Franklin Township Council Jan. 27 work session cancelled. Budget hearing scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 3  at 7 p.m. has been changed to a regular meeting.

Community Events

Princeton Community Works has been rescheduled for Friday, Jan. 30, 5 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. at the Frist Campus Center at Princeton University.

Princeton Center for Yoga and Health has cancelled all Tuesday classes a.m. and p.m. because of the icy road conditions.
