Junior League of Greater Princeton Announces Community Grants Recipients

Since its inception, the Junior League of Greater Princeton Community Grants Program has awarded over $150,000 to more than 100 organizations. Grants help support non-profit organizations that seek to empower women and enhance child health and wellness.

The Junior League of Greater Princeton is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The Junior League of Greater Princeton focuses its efforts on the needs of women and children in Mercer and Bucks counties as well as the surrounding areas. Women over the age of 21, committed to volunteerism are welcome as members. The Junior League of Greater Princeton is part of the Association of Junior Leagues International, which includes 293 Junior Leagues in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Great Britain. The Junior League of Greater Princeton is pleased to announce this years grant recipients:

Community Action Service Center dba Rise – $500
The mission of Rise is to assist local families and individuals in recovering from setbacks and achieving their full potential. The grant will provide supplies for the Rise Summer Academic Enrichment Program. This program is a 6-week program that offers up to 125 students in grades K-8 the opportunity to develop their math, art, reading, science and language arts skills and strengthen their social skills. The program was created to provide for the needs of at-risk children from local struggling families over a decade ago. Children of these families often struggle to keep up with schoolwork during the academic year, and they have a difficult time retaining their skills between school years. Each day, campers receive two nutritious meals and a full day of learning and fun.

Millhill Child & Family Development – $1,500
Millhill Child & Family Development exists to support and empower the Greater Trenton area’s most at-risk children and their families. Their mission is to empower children and families through individualized and culturally sensitive educational and behavioral health services, to transform our under-resourced community. The funds will be used to support their “STEM Ready!” Preschool Literacy program by purchasing specific books, games and other supplies. With the grant, Millhill will be able to provide new books, materials, and games for the 150 two- through five-year-olds served through Millhill’s early education program. Millhill’s certified early education teachers will utilize specific materials, teaching strategies, and assessment methods based on both the chronological age and developmental readiness of the children in their classes and on each child’s individualized learning plan.

Victory Christian Family Worship Ministries, Inc. – $2,300
The core goals of Victory Christian Family Worship are to support youth, women and families with counseling, parent training, family literacy training and assistance during crisis situations. The Connect 4 Success youth outreach program is focused on supporting teen mothers with education, mentoring, and job training skills. ​​​​The Connect 4 Success Youth Outreach Program has conducted literacy, counseling and mentoring projects to help build success into the lives of young people in Trenton.  “The Cost Of Life 4 Teen Moms” project is a four-month project where the young parents will be trained using real-world examples and interactive lessons. The participating teen moms will learn the following: personal budgeting, timely bill paying, establishing good credit, banking, paying for an apartment, paying for quality child care, car purchasing, the value of insurance, financial job readiness and financing college or technical school education.

Young Scholars Institute – $1,000
The mission of Young Scholars’ Institute is to empower Trenton-area youth through educational, recreational and cultural activities to help them develop the skills necessary to excel academically and to maximize their academic, vocational and career choices. This grant will help pay for supplies for its Summer Enrichment Program, a six-week summer academic enrichment program that provides Trenton-area pre-school, elementary and middle school students (Pre-K through 8) with a unique and exciting summer learning experience which consists of academic instruction in reading, writing, math and science in the mornings. The afternoons are reserved for cultural exposure and a variety of recreational activities.
