Fire damages hotel on Route 1 in South Brunswick

A two-alarm fire damaged the Best Western Princeton Manor Inn & Suites on Route 1 south on Sunday night, displacing all the guests.

One guest at the hotel spotted a fire in his room just before 7:30 p.m. and alerted nearby residents. A dozen people called 911 to report seeing the fire, police said. The Kingston Fire Department arrived and observed heavy fire pouring out of the front of the hotel room and spreading to nearby rooms. Guests from all 50 rooms were safely evacuated, police said. It took 60 firefighters from 6 different fire departments — Kingston, Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, Plainsboro, Little Rocky Hill, and North Brunswick #3 — to put out the blaze. The hotel was left uninhabitable.

Two firefighters were transported to the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro for heat exhaustion and later released. Emergency medical service units that responded included, Monmouth Junction, Kendall Park, Plainsboro, and North Brunswick.

The South Brunswick Fire Safety Bureau is investigating the cause of the blaze.

One lane of Route 1 south was closed for a few hours Sunday night because of the fire.
