New director named for ReCAP book repository

Ian Bogus

Ian Bogus, the curator of preservation at University of Pennsylvania Libraries, has been chosen to lead the Research Collections and Preservation Consortium (ReCAP) located in Plainsboro at Princeton University’s Forrestal Campus.

ReCAP, formed by Columbia University, Princeton University and the New York Public Library, is the country’s largest offsite library shelving facility. The facility houses more than 14 million items from the consortium members’ library and archival collections. Consortium members, along with associate member Harvard University, fulfill approximately 250,000 requests for materials each year from researchers and libraries around the world.

“Ian brings depth of knowledge about library preservation as well as extensive experience with processes and digitization operations that will be indispensable for shaping the future of this growing state-of-the-art facility and service,” stated Ann Thornton, university librarian at Columbia University Libraries.

During the past eight years at University of Pennsylvania Libraries, Bogus provided leadership for all preservation activities. For two years he served as the interim director of the Schoenberg Center for Electronic Text and Image, the Penn Libraries’ digitization program, where he developed a strategy for advancing preservation practices and designed a digital forensics system to assess and ingest born-digital archival materials. Previously, Bogus was the head of Yale University Libraries’ General Collection Conservation, where he developed policies and procedures governing the preservation and conservation of general collections materials and expanded the school’s digital repository.

Bogus has also worked in preservation at Rutgers University Libraries and holds a master’s degree in library information science from Rutgers University, a certificate in preservation management from the Preservation Management Institute, and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Rutgers University. He will begin his new position on Nov. 13.
