Author Toni Morrison Selling Her Princeton Home

Morrison's House at 280 Nassau

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning novelist Toni Morrison has put her Nassau Street home up for sale for $1.795 million.

Her five-bedroom house, built in 1880 for the Rev. William Harris and known as “The House of Seven Gables”, has recently been renovated. It boasts white-washed beamed ceilings, totally modernized kitchen and baths, and a traditional center-hall layout. The house is just a short walk to Princeton University and downtown shops.

The house, located at 280 Nassau Street, is listed with Henderson Realty in Princeton. Annual property taxes on the house are just over $26,000.

Morrison, who turned 80 in February, taught at Princeton University from 1989 until her retirement in 2006. The author of more than a dozen books, including Sula, Song of Solomon, and Beloved, she also co-wrote books for children with her younger son, Slade, who died last year.

A recipient of the National Book Foundation’s Medal of Distinguished Contribution to American Letters and the National Humanities Medal, Morrison recently gave the commencement speech at Rutgers University. She serves on the editorial board for The Nation.
