Princeton Borough Mayoral Candidates Face Off Tonight

Jachera
Moore

A Princeton Borough mayoral forum scheduled for tonight will most likely be the only chance Princeton Borough voters will get to see the two candidates square off.

The Jewish Center on Nassau Street is hosting the debate between Democrat Yina Moore and Republican Jill Jachera tonight at 7:30 p.m. The debate, moderated by the League of Women Voters, will be shown on TV 30.

Moore defeated longtime Councilman David Goldfarb in the Democratic primary. Jachera won the Republican primary as a write-in candidate.

The race is the first contested general borough mayoral election in many years (some say 30 years, but that figure still needs to be verified).

The Princeton YWCA asked Moore to debate Jachera in a forum YW leaders said would be hosted by the YWCA and the Princeton Public Library. Moore declined the invitation, citing Jachera’s close ties with the YWCA. Jachera is a past president of the YWCA board of directors and currently serves on the board. Moore and members of her campaign team said the YWCA has, to their knowledge, never previously sponsored or participated in a local political forum.

Jachera said she is willing to have more debates.

“While Yina Moore has not yet agreed to another debate, I agree to appear at as many debates as are necessary for the voters to have an opportunity to meet and hear the candidates on the issues,” she said in her most recent campaign e-newsletter.
