Princeton Certified by Sustainable Jersey

The two Princetons have become certified as sustainable communities by the Sustainable Jersey municipal program.

More than 80 municipalities across the state have been certified to date. Certified towns are recognized for their contributions to making their communities more sustainable. To achieve certification they must earn points and meet various benchmarks.

Princeton has received bronze level certification for forming a municipal green team  and completing various sustainable actions. The towns conducted a natural resources inventory as well as an energy audit for all municipal buildings. Additional projects that received points included hosting a farmer’s market, creating numerous community wide projects such as the BYOBag campaign, and initiating a curbside food waste compost program.

Founded in 2009, Sustainable Jersey is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that supports community efforts to reduce waste, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and improve environmental equity. Sustainable Jersey provides tools, training and financial incentives to support and reward communities as they pursue sustainability programs.

Princeton Borough and Princeton Township will be honored with other municipalities  Nov. 15 at the Sustainable Jersey awards luncheon at the New Jersey League of Municipalities annual conference in Atlantic City.

“We are thrilled to be recognized as a sustainable community by Sustainable Jersey,” said Township Mayor Chad Goerner. “Princeton has made a tremendous effort over the past three years to seek out alternative energy opportunities, protect the local environment and support our local business community.  We have only begun to innovate in this arena.”

“This award recognizes the good work of individuals in the municipalities as well as in our schools, businesses and homes,” said Borough Mayor Mildred Trotman. “We are so proud to receive this honor from Sustainable Jersey.”
