Cory’s Ride Awards Record Number of Scholarships

Cory Golis

Fifteen area students were awarded scholarships Saturday at Cory’s Ride, the annual bike ride to honor Anchor House cyclist Cory Golis.

About 150 people attended the annual cycling event to remember the Hopewell teen who died in 1998 on the last day of the Anchor House Ride for Runaways, a 500-mile, week-long ride that raises money for runaway and abused children and teens.

The Golis family and Anchor House presented $12,750 in college scholarship money to the students at the ride picnic at Tall Cedars Picnic Grove in Yardville. A record number of students received scholarships because of the tough economy and the high cost of school, said Cory’s father, Jim Golis.

“The need was there,” Golis said. “We had more students than ever applying to the scholarship program this year. We wanted to support as many students as we could.”

The winners were: Nottingham High graduates Karen Acquah, Aveena Ramdial and Micheldy Pierre; Lawrence High graduate Michael Woods; West Windsor Plainsboro graduate Victoria Karas; Steinert graduates Sarah Calixte, Sebastian Collazo, Christian Bruni and Patrick Gibbons; Hamilton High West graduates Ashanieyah McClinton, Shane Young, Caitlin Kevett and George Zimmer; Hopewell Valley High graduate Claire Monagha, and Ewing High graduate Kaila Burgess.
