One Dead, Three Injured in Route 1 Crash

One person died in the car crash on Route 1 early yesterday morning that blocked traffic for several hours.

The driver of a Jeep Wrangler crashed into a utility pole while traveling south between Alexander Road and Carnegie Center Boulevard, police said. An eyewitness saw the Jeep veer off the road. All four people in the Jeep were ejected from the vehicle when it hit the pole, police said.

The driver was dead on the scene. As of Monday morning, his identity has not been released because police are still trying to notify his relatives, Lt. William Bastedo told Planet Princeton.

The three passengers were taken to the Capital Health Regional Campus  in Trenton, police said.

It is not clear why the driver veered off the road. The passengers in the Jeep were sleeping when the accident occurred, police said.

Southbound Route 1 traffic was blocked off between Alexander Road and Carnegie Center Boulevard from about 7:30 a.m. until after 10 a.m. Shortly after the accident there was a two-car crash at the circle on Washington Road and one northbound lane had to be closed down.

Editor’s note: An earlier edition of this story incorrectly stated that the passengers were taken to the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro.
