Amazon Plans to Open Fulfillment Center in Mercer County

amazonAmazon, Inc. today announced plans to open a 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Robbinsville. The company will create several hundred of full-time jobs with benefits at the site.

“Phase one of Amazon’s new state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Robbinsville will spur growth and investment for the Garden State and our local economies while bringing meaningful job creation opportunities for New Jersey’s families,” Governor Chris Christie said in a release about the plan. “Amazon’s multi-million dollar investment in this one facility alone is expected to result in the creation of hundreds of full-time jobs in addition to temporary, seasonal and construction jobs. Today’s announcement represents the strength of our successful partnership with Amazon and I want to express our sincere thanks for their continued commitment to investing in our state and bringing these job opportunities to our residents.”

Amazon employees who work at the fulfillment center will pick, pack and ship items like books to customers. The Fortune 500 company offers full-time benefits to employees, including healthcare.

“We are excited to open our first fulfillment center in New Jersey, bringing jobs and investment to Robbinsville Township,” said Mike Roth, vice president of Amazon’s North American Operations. “We appreciate the support of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, New Jersey Business Action Center, and other state and local leaders who have worked with us to find this site.”

Private equity firm KTR Capital Partners is building the project. Amazon planning to open the facility in 2014.  KTR worked out a 20-year payment in lieu of taxes deal on the property with the Robbinsville Township Council that is worth $13.75 million.

  1. I knew this was coming. My brother-in-law and I read an article about Amazon’s plans for put the big box stores out of business. Imagine if you could use your Amazon Prime account to order something in the morning and have it delivered the afternoon of the same day.

  2. The most significant result of this is that Amazon customers in NJ will now be charged 7% sales tax on all purchases
