Body Believed to Be Lambertville Resident Sarah Majoras Recovered from D&R Canal Tonight

391256_543452112345486_2082520616_nRescue workers recovered a body from the Delaware and Raritan Canal tonight that appears to be missing Lambertville resident Sarah Majoras.

Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony Kearns held a press conference at 6 p.m. to announce that a body had been found an hour earlier. While a positive identification of the body has not been made, it matches Majoras’ description, he said.

“At 4:50 this afternoon, a female body was recovered in the D & R Canal near the lock south of Bridge Street in Lambertville,” Kearns said.  “Divers from the New Jersey State Police TEAMS Unit made the discovery after a boot was discovered in the canal by another State Police Diver assigned to the Search & Recovery Task Force earlier this afternoon.”

Kearns said while the clothing description is consistent with what Sarah Majoras was wearing, a positive identification, as well as the cause and manner of death, will be handled by the Hunterdon County Medical Examiner. The investigation still remains active until investigators determine what happened, he said.

Kearns said there is no indication of foul play involved with Majoras’ disappearance. He is urging anyone with information about what might have happened to come forward.

“While we have no substantial evidence of foul play, our minds remain open, we are looking at all possibilities, and we continue to pursue any information we can in an attempt to make sense of what might have happened,” he said.

Kerarns thanked all the people who helped search for Majoras over the last four days.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the Majoras family and her many friends in Lambertville and New Hope,” he said.

Assisting agencies that helped with the search include: the New Jersey State Police Marine Unit, New Jersey State Police  Missing Persons Unit, Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Department, New Hope Police Department, Mayor DelVecchio, HCPO Major Crimes Unit, HCPO Narcotics Task Force, HCPO Special Victims Unit, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Solebury Township Police Department, Lambertville Fire and Rescue Squad, Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit, Hunterdon County Department of Public Safety, and Palisades Search & Rescue Dogs.

Majoras, a bartender at the New Hope club John and Peter’s for the last 16 years, was last seen leaving the club on foot at about 2 a.m. Saturday. Video footage shows she crossed the free bridge into Lambertville around 2:30 a.m. and made a left onto Lambert Lane.

Hundreds of residents spent the last four days searching for Majoras and the case made international news. A Facebook page called Find Sarah Majoras collected more than 11,500 followers in just a few days. After the press conference tonight, a message was posted to the Facebook page thanking everyone for helping with the search.

“There is no way to word this that makes this statement less painful. A female body was found tonight by rescue crews in the Canal in Lambertville that does match the description of Sarah,” the Facebook page note reads. “It’s excruciatingly hard to say that the search for Sarah might be over but we can not abandon the family that we have created over the past 4 days and for most – over the past 16 years. This community is testament alone to the overwhelming Love that we had for Sarah, the same Love that she showed all of us day in and day out. We ask that you reflect and grieve and reach out for support if you need it. Please reserve any rhetoric outside of those lines and instead convert that energy into a positive force and send it to her family and closest friends. As involved as we feel – it is unimaginable how they feel. Thank you everyone for everything – we did this together – Stay Strong for Sarah. Rest in Piece kind soul.”
