Prosecutor: Body Identified as Sarah Majoras, No Evidence of Foul Play

SarahHunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III and Lambertville Police Director Bruce Cocuzza announced this afternoon that the body that was found in the D&R Canal yesterday has positively been identified as resident Sarah Majoras.

“Preliminary results from the medical examiner do not indicate anything suspicious,” Kearns said. “At this time, all indications are that Sarah’s death was a tragic accident. Our case remains active so that we can provide Sarah’s family and friends with factual information and answers to help them cope with their loss. At this point in the investigation, there is no indication of foul play. All of Sarah’s personal property, including cash, identification, wallet, keys, and flashlight were in her possession. The official cause and manner of death from the medical examiner are pending toxicology results.”

Majoras went missing after leaving John and Peter’s in New Hope, Pa. on Saturday, January 26th at about 2:00 a.m.. She crossed the free bridge into Lambertville and was last seen on surveillance video in the area of Lambert Lane. Yesterday just before 5 p.m., divers under the direction of the New Jersey State Police TEAMS Unit, located her body in the canal near the lock south of Bridge Street.

“Our hearts go out to the Majoras family and the many friends of Sarah in Lambertville and New Hope during this time of grief,” Kearns said, thanking everyone who helped with the search.

The agencies that assisted the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and the Lambertville Police Department include the New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau, New Jersey State Police TEAMS Unit, New Jersey State Police Missing Persons Unit, New Jersey State Police Search & Recovery Task Force, Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Department, New Hope Police Department, Lambertville Mayor DelVecchio, the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Dive Rescue Team, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Solebury Township Police Department, the Pennsylvania State Police, The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, the Lambertville Fire and Rescue Squad, New Hope Fire and Rescue Units, Garden State Underwater Recovery Unit, Hunterdon County Department of Public Safety, and Palisades Search & Rescue Dogs.

“I also wish to thank the army of volunteer citizens and friends of Sarah that mobilized to assist in the ground search of the area,” Kearns said. “They were very organized and helpful. I commend this dedicated group for their teamwork and perseverance.”
