Pennington Resident Jared Flesher Named Editor of Edible Jersey

flesherJared Flesher, director of the film” Sourlands”,  has been named editor of Edible Jersey, the magazine that celebrates the local food of the Garden State.

Flesher, a New Jersey native who  lives in Pennington, has written for Edible Jersey since 2010. A 2005 magna cum laude journalism graduate of the University of Richmond, he has contributed to a wide range of national and regional publications and websites, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Columbia Journalism Review, New Jersey Monthly and Gannett New Jersey newspapers.

In his new role, he will take over editorial duties formerly handled by Nancy Brannigan Painter, who previously served as editor publisher of Edible Jersey.

“Since we first met a few years ago, I have always been impressed by Jared’s thoughtful enthusiasm for and knowledge of the intersection of food, farming and the environment,” Painter said. “He has a reporter’s curiosity about the issues that impact New Jersey’s sustainable food economy and food culture. Some of that is already coming through in what he has brought to our Summer issue, including a `Young Farmer’s Diary’ series, an article about growing hazelnuts in New Jersey, and a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to work in the kitchen of a top restaurant. We are thrilled to welcome Jared to our team and look forward to the positive impact he will have on Edible Jersey’s next stage of development.”

Painter, who founded the statewide magazine along with her husband in 2007, will con-tinue to serve as publisher. Edible Jersey recently announced an increase in its publishing schedule to six issues per year.

Flesher is familiar to many as the award-winning director of documentary films exploring topics of sustainability and the environment. In addition to “Sourlands” he directed “The Farmer and the Horse.” He is currently at work on “Field Biologist”, a film about a young bird researcher from New Jersey, to be released in 2014.
