Polls Open Until 8 p.m. for Special U.S. Senate Election

votePolls are open until 8 p.m. today for the special election to fill New Jersey’s open seat in the United States Senate.

The special election, which some have referred to as “Wacky Wednesday”, has caused a great deal of confusion, with some voters heading out to the polls yesterday. Others thought the election was last week.

Democratic Newark Mayor Cory Booker is running against Republican Steve Lonegan to fill the Senate seat that became vacant when Senator Frank Lautenberg died. Lonegan is a former mayor of Bogota, and state director of the libertarian group Americans for Prosperity.

The special election will cost an estimated $24 million. Republican Gov. Chris Christie made the decision to hold the special election three weeks before the general election. He vetoed a bill that would have consolidated the two election days into one, arguing it would cause unnecessary voter confusion.
