The Princeton Community Democratic Organization (PCDO) will hold a special meeting to endorse a candidate to replace U.S. Rep. Rush Holt, who announced this week that he will not seek re-election.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on March 9 at the Suzanne Patterson Center behind the former Princeton Borough municipal building. The meeting is open to the public, but only people who have registered to be members of the PCDO by Feb. 23 can vote for the endorsement.

Holt’s retirement announcement triggered a frenzied rush of politicians announcing they were considering running for his 12th District seat.

In Mercer County, County Executive Brian Hughes, County Clerk Paula Sollami-Covello, State Assemblyman Reed Gusciora and State Senator Shirley Turner initially indicated they were considering a run. But then the top power broker in the county, Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson-Coleman, announced she wanted to run for the seat. The Democrats in Mercer County quickly put their support behind her.

The 12 District covers parts of Mercer,  Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties.  State Senator Linda Greenstein of Middlesex County and State Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula of Somerset County have both declared their candidacies.

All candidates who have declared their candidacy will be invited to the PCDO meeting. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the candidates from 7 to 7:30 p.m. The candidates will then each have several minutes to speak, followed by a question and answer period.
