Princeton Police Blotter: Thieves Steal Champagne, Laptop, Bicycles

princeton policeA Princeton resident drove her 2000 Toyota minivan to a residence on Princeton Avenue on Sunday morning, June 22, and parked the van in the driveway, but forgot to shift to park. The van rolled forward and pinned her lower legs between her minivan and a 2010 Toyota Highlander that was parked in the driveway. The resident of the house she was visiting quickly reversed the minivan and freed her. Julie Cavallaro, 56, complained of pain in her lower legs but refused medical treatment at the scene. There was no damage to the vehicles and police did not issue a summons in the incident.

A gas leak occurred in the backyard of a residence on the 300 block of Great Road on June 19 at about 11 a.m. An employee of the Manville-based York Fence Co. was installing a new fence post and digging with a hand tool when he struck an underground gas line. The homeowner was home at the time, but the house was not evacuated. No detours or road blocks were conducted. There were no injuries at the site. PSE&G was contacted and arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and capped the gas line, stopping the leak temporary until a permanent repair could be made. Princeton Police, Princeton Fire Department, and Princeton 1st Aid Squad were all present at the scene.

While on routine patrol the morning of June 19, police observed water coming up from the roadway on Mountain Avenue. A detour was put in place on Mountain Avenue between Elm Road and Pardoe Road. The New Jersey American Water Co. responded and found that a water main under the roadway had ruptured. The road was closed for about two to three hours.

A Lawrence resident was pulled over for speeding on Mercer Street on June 18 and police allegedly found marijuana, drug paraphernalia and alcohol in his possession. Angelo DiMeglio, 20, of Lawrenceville, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and being under age in possession of alcohol. He was transported to police headquarters, processed, and released.

A grey Fuji 6-speed bicycle was stolen from an unlocked shed on the first block of Linden Lane some time between June 12 and June 16. The value of the bicycle is unknown, police said.

A men’s black Schwinn mountain bike was stolen from the bike rack at the Princeton Public Library some time between 6:10 p.m. and 7:20 p.m. on June 16. The bike, which was left unlocked, was valued at $400. There are no suspects in the theft, police said.

Two teen boys were taken in to police custody on June 16 after the stole two cigarette lighters from the Rite Aid Pharmacy at the Princeton Shopping Center. They stole a Ronson Jetlite lighter valued at $4.49 and a Zippo lighter valued at $13.99. The store alarm was activated when they left the store, and police were called to the scene. The boys were transported to police headquarters, where they were released to their parents.

A burglar forcibly entered a residence on the 100 block of Valley Road on June 13 by breaking a kitchen window. The burglar stole a bottle of champagne, a laptop, and a small plastic safe. The value of the items is estimated to be $1,780. The police detective bureau is investigating the case.

Just before 11 p.m. on June 13, police arrested a Trenton man in a parking lot on the 200 block of Nassau Street after stopping him for carrying an open container of alcohol. Aaron Gyampo, 22, allegedly gave police a false name and had warrants out of Ewing Township Municipal Court, Hamilton Township Municipal Court and Trenton Municipal Court totaling $831. He was unable to post bail and was turned over to Hamilton Police Department with summonses for hindering apprehension, carrying open container of alcohol in public, and littering.

Police stopped a North Brunswick man on the 100 block of Nassau Street on June 12 after conducting a suspicious person investigation. Police allegedly found forgery devices when they searched Jeffrey Chevry, 21. He was placed under arrest and charged with two counts of possession of forgery devices and one count of forgery. He was later released after bail was posted.

A Berlin resident was stopped for a motor vehicle equipment violation on June 12 on Route 206 near Hutchinson Drive, and police allegedly found he was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. Mark Puricelli, 30, was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana under 50g, possession of drug paraphernalia, and various motor vehicle violations.
