AvalonBay Will Begin Demolition Work at Princeton Hospital Site Next Week

medical centerDeveloper AvalonBay is slated to begin demolishing the buildings at the former downtown hospital site on Witherspoon Street in Princeton next Thursday, Sept. 4, town officials said.

Bob Kiser, the head of engineering for the town, said last night that AvalonBay will likely begin demolition the day after the neighborhood meeting. The company that is conducting the demolition will begin with the smaller structures near the parking garage, he said. The demolition project will take about four months, he said.

AvalonBay will host a neighborhood meeting on Sept. 3 to discuss the demolition process. The meeting will be held in the main meeting room of the municipal building at 400 Witherspoon Street from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The meeting is open to all neighborhood residents.

The town of Princeton and AvalonBay agreed to a revised developer’s agreement last week that paved the way for the project to move forward.

A 280-unit apartment complex is slated for the site. The development will include 56 affordable units. Some neighborhood residents oppose the project because of the size of the complex, the number of units, and concerns about environmental issues. Affordable housing advocates support the project because of the number of new affordable units that will be added to Princeton.
