Marc Dashield, the township manager and chief executive officer of Montclair in northern New Jersey, has been selected a the next administrator to lead the town of Princeton.

The town has been negotiating a salary agreement with Dashield this week and has reached an agreement, but the governing body has not formally voted on hiring him yet. A special meeting to approve the appointment is expected to be scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday.

Three finalists were in the running for Administrator Bob Bruschi’s job after a fourth was eliminated. Kathy Monzo, the assistant administrator in Princeton since consolidation, was a finalist and was considered the favorite going into the selection process. The other finalists were all experienced administrators in New Jersey towns.

Bruschi, the former administrator in Princeton Borough and the administrator for the consolidated Princeton, will retire next month.

Dashield has been the administrator in Montclair since 2009. He previously served as the administrator for Plainfield. In Plainfield, he reorganized the city’s downtown revitalization efforts and instituted a master plan that incorporated smart growth and transit-oriented development principles that capitalized on the city’s two train stations. Prior to that, he was CFO of Franklin Township for three years, where he managed a $45 million annual operating budget, a $6 million water utility budget and $2 million for open space. In Montclair this year, he put together a $77.7 million budget, a million less than the previous year, with no tax increase and a $1.5 million reduction in debt service.
