Princeton Today: Paint It Pink

Pink ribbon istockThe Quaker Bridge Mall and 94.5 PST will host “Paint the Mall Pink” from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight. The goal of the event is to bring community and local organizations together to help raise funds and awareness about breast cancer, a disease that affects thousands of families across the region. The event will include interactive activities including free health screenings, speakers and silent auctions. Breast cancer survivor Suzanne Reynolds will give a brief talk and Sur La Table will conduct healthy cooking demonstrations.

The silent auction will feature items from Starbucks, Time After Time, Sephora, Lord & Taylor, The Walking Company, Soma Intimates, Sur La Table Cooking Class, Nassau Inn and more. A 50/50 raffle will support the YWCA Princeton Breast Cancer Resource Center’s “In the Pink” Fashion Show. Attendees will also be able to purchase a limited edition pink Quaker Bridge Mall tote bag with a portable power pack battery with a $5 donation. One-hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated to  local charities.

Paint the Mall Pink is one of several events in the Princeton area in honor of breast cancer awareness month. The YWCA “In the Pink”Fashion Show Friday, Oct. 10., is sold out.

Musicians in the Japanese Antinuclear Movement – Noriko Manabe, assistant professor of music at Princeton University, will give a talk “Musicians in the Japanese Antinuclear Movement Post-Fukushima Daiichi” at noon in Jones Hall, Room 202. The talk examines the stance of Japanese musicians since the Fukushima nuclear disaster and the challenges those who choose to support the antinuclear cause face.

“What Arts and Humanities Are Good For” Lecture Series Kicks Off – William Cronon, professor of history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will give the keynote address for a new Princeton Environmental Institute lecture series “What Arts and Humanities Are Good For” at 6 p.m. in Dodds Auditorium at the Woodrow Wilson School on Washington Road. Cronon will discuss how the insights and methods of history, literature and the arts can be used to help tackle urgent environmental issues.

Preparing Students with Disabilities for College – Author and college learning disabilities specialist Elizabeth Hamblet will explain how the system for accommodations works at college and outlines students’ rights and responsibilities within that system. She also will share what the research says are the skills students should develop while they’re in high school to ensure success when they reach college. 7 p.m. Princeton Public Library Teen Center.

Screening of “A Cube of Sugar” – A day in the life in a very traditional family in Iran. 2011 Persian film directed by Reza Mirkarimi.  With subtitles. 7:30pm, Jones Hall, Room 100, Princeton University. Free and open to the public. Part of the Near Eastern Studies film series.

Jazz Vespers at the Princeton University Chapel – A service of poetry, music, and meditation featuring members of the Chapel Choir and Jazz Vespers Ensemble. 8 p.m. Free.

Open Mic Night at the A&B – Sign up begins at 9 p.m. Host is Eric Puliti tonight. 28 Witherspoon Street, Princeton. Performances begin at 10 p.m.

COMMUTE

Minor delays on NJ Transit heading to NYC as of 8:20 a.m.

Princeton – Bank Street will be closed through Oct. 11, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, due to construction. Residents and employees enter Bank St. via Chambers St. during the closure.

Milling and paving on Paul Robeson Place will take place Oct. 9-11 from 8 a.m. to about 4 p.m.Traffic will be reduced to one lane of travel during the milling, and closed all together during the paving processes. Parking will be prohibited on Paul Robeson Place throughout the operation. Expect delays. Plan an alternate route.

Hopewell – Road work continues along Blackwell Road into the intersection of Pennington Lawrenceville Road (Route 546) between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Motorists should expect minor delays when traveling through this area.

Lawrence – Pennington-Lawrenceville Road (County Route 546) from Federal City Road to U.S. Route 206 resurfacing work continues. One lane open in each direction.

Route 206 between the Fackler Road Extension and Province Line Road is being reconstructed as part of a water main project. The work is being done mostly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m.
