Princeton Today: Rush Holt Reflects on 16 Years in Congress

The ACLU of New Jersey will host the talk “Scientist and Civil Libertarian: A Conversation with Congressman Rush Holt” at 7 p.m. tonight at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton.

Holt has represented New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District for 16 years.  He will sit down with ACLU of New Jersey’s Udi Ofer for a conversation focused on  his work in Washington and his support of civil liberties. A scientist and five-time Jeopardy champion, Holt has served as a leader on civil rights and civil liberties issues, ranging from voting rights to protecting civil liberties in the face of NSA spying, and the First Amendment.

The doors open at 6 p.m. The event will run from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Unitarian Church is located at 50 Cherry Hill Road in Princeton, just off Route 206.

Princeton School Board Candidates Night – The PTO Council and Special Education PTO for Princeton Public Schools will sponsor the School Board Candidates Night  at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of John Witherspoon Middle School, 217 Walnut Lane, Princeton. Free and open to the public.

Princeton Council Meeting – The Council will discuss organic recycling, the date for Communiversity 2015, the Spring Street garage, and several other issues. The public meetings begins at 7 p.m. in the main meeting room at town hall, 400 Witherspoon Street, Princeton.

Author James M. McPherson Visits the Princeton Public Library –  The Pulitzer Prize-winning author and American Civil War historian discusses his latest book “Embattled Rebel: Jefferson Davis as Commander in Chief.” McPherson is the George Henry Davis ’86 Professor Emeritus of United States History at Princeton University. He received the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for his book “Battle Cry of Freedom.” 7 p.m. Community Room. Free.

Screening of “Bag It” – The story of how Jeb Berrier changed his life forever by making the decision to stop using plastic bags. Post film discussion. 7 p.m., The College of New Jersey Library Auditorium, Ewing. Free.

COMMUTE

County Route 601 is open again in Montgomery. County Route 605 between Blue Spring Road and Crescent Ave in Rocky Hill is now open.

Bank St. in Princeton will be closed Oct. 28-Nov. 1 due to construction.

Route 518 between Canal Road and Carroll Place is down to one lane, with alternating traffic weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The speed limit in the construction area has been reduced to 35 miles per hour. Starting Nov. 10, the road will be closed with a detour in place. Starting Nov. 24, the road will be closed with a detour weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The work is part of a long-term project that will be completed by the end of 2015. Delays should be expected. Motorists should exercise extra caution in the area and follow posted detours during times of closure.
