Princeton Today: Honoring Veterans

flagsveteransCommunities across the country will honor people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces for Veterans Day today. The federal holiday coincides with other holidays honoring military personnel in other parts of the world, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which mark the anniversary of the end of World War I. The United States also originally observed Armistice Day, which evolved into the current Veterans Day holiday in 1954. U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed Armistice Day for November 11, 1919.

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations,” Wilson said in the proclamation.
