Man Killed in Hunting Accident in West Windsor

westwindsorpoliceA Chesterfield man was killed while he was hunting with his father in a field along Old Trenton Road Saturday afternoon, police said.

West Windsor Police officers were dispatched to the fields at 1201 Old Trenton Road just after 4 p.m. after someone called to report a hunting accident with an injury.

When officers arrived they were directed to the man, who was in a nearby patch of woods. Medics attempted to save the man’s life but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives from the West Windsor Police Investigations Bureau and the Mercer County Homicide Task Force were dispatched to the scene to conduct an investigation. Although the investigation is still ongoing, police said details as of now the evidence indicates that the man died from a single gunshot wound to the head and neck area from his own firearm.

The victim and his father were the only two people in the hunting party. The two had Canadian Geese decoys spread out in front of their blind and were properly licensed to hunt the birds. Police said they believe the tragic incident was an accident and expressed their condolences to the family and friends of the victim.

An autopsy is scheduled for early next week which will help the ongoing investigation. Police are not releasing the name of the victim until all of his relatives have been notified. The Chesterfield man was about 45 years old, police said.
