nelson-mandela_s-top-five-contributions-to-humanityMcCarter Theatre will host a read-in event at three area libraries in January to commemorate and celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela.

Community members, artists, and civic leaders are welcome to take part in the event, “Unrelenting Voices Read-In: Freedom, Justice, Mandela, and More,” at the Princeton Public Library, the Trenton Free Library, and the New Brunswick Free Library on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

People will take turns reading aloud the words and writings of Mandela, as well as prose, poetry, and dramatic works by other voices for freedom like Martin Luther King Jr., Maya Angelou, and Desmond Tutu. The event will explore social justice, resistance in the face of oppression, and the power of art as political protest.

The event is open to people of all ages. You can participate as either an audience member or a reader. If you are interested in reading, contact McCarter Theatre at(609)-258-6546 or email kplace@mccarter.org.

The program is presented in conjunction with McCarter Theatre’s upcoming 2015 international co-production of “Sizwe Banzi is Dead.”
