Fans of Cafe 44 are mourning the loss of their favorite cozy breakfast and lunch spot on Leigh Avenue in downtown Princeton.

The restaurant, formerly located at 44 Leigh Avenue, has closed down at that location and has been moved across the street. It will share space with Tortuga’s Mexican Village. The two eateries are run by the same owner. Jennifer Jefferis has owned Tortuga’s Mexican Village for more than 25 years.

Cafe 44 quickly became a favorite spot for Princeton residents when it opened in the spring or 2012. Patrons loved the good food, casual atmosphere, and comfy leather couches.

The cafe is open in the new location Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and weekends from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tortuga’s Mexican Village will serve lunch in the same space weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner will be served Mondays 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday-Thursday 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Sources said the lease was up,  and the landlord and Cafe 44 could not reach an agreement regarding the rent.

  1. 44 is overpriced at best, the mexican food is good but spend the $9 on organic eggs and cheese and make your own omelette!

    1. Indeed. Portions had recently bern cut at Cafe 44 – often a sign of resturant ‘stress’ – and 44 became even more expensive.
