Princeton Today: Icy Morning Commute

freezing rain mapA sleet and freezing rain mix has fallen overnight near the interstate 95 corridor and locations north and west of I-95. If you are driving this morning, use caution. Reduce your speed and allow extra time to reach your destination.The speed limit has been reduced to 5o miles per hour on the Garden State Parkway between Irvington and the New York line, and the New Jersey Turnpike between Carlstadt and Fort Lee.

The National Weather Service winter weather advisory in effect until 10 a.m. Freezing rain is expected before 9 a.m., then rain. Light and variable wind northwest around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Rain may mix with sleet and snow briefly Monday night. High of 37 today.

Systemwide cross honoring of NJ TRANSIT rail, light rail and bus passes/tickets will be in effect today due to the winter weather conditions.

Princeton Council –  The council will discuss putting a solar array on municipal landfill property,  a Prospect Avenue capital improvements project, an ordinance regulating parking along portions of Hamilton Avenue, a HiTops request for permission to hold the annual Princeton Half
Marathon on Sunday, Oct. 4, and bid awards for trash, crosstown bus service, armored car services, and trash collection. 7 p.m., municipal building, 400 Witherspoon St., main meeting room.

Poets in the Library Features Jean Hollander and Tom Murray – Featured poets Jean Hollander and Tom Murray read from their work followed by an open-mic session. Hollander has published five books of poems. Her chapbook “Counterpoint,” published in 2011 and translated into Italian, recently appeared in “Poesia,” an Italian magazine. Hollander’s poems have appeared in many literary journals, as well as in Best Poems Anthologies and other collections. She has given readings at Poets House, The Poetry Society of America, Harvard University, Dodge Poetry Festival, Distinguished Poets Series, and many other poetry celebrations.  Her verse translation (with Robert Hollander) of Dante’s “Commedia” received favorable reviews in The New Yorker, Publisher’s Weekly, The New York Times and other outlets. Murray is a Princeton resident and retired software engineer. His work is always metrical and most often rhymed and has been published in The Lyric (for which he was awarded their Fulvanna Prize), Parody and US1. “The Ballad of Captain Red’s Crew,” a novella-length poem, is his first book. COMMUTE

Emergency construction on Route 31 southbound near CR 622/Olden Ave in Ewing Twp. Right lane closed.

As a result of a water main break, Laurel Avenue is shut down between Route 27 and Union Street . This closure will last through the morning commute.

The full closure of Rt. 518 between Carroll Place and Canal Road is scheduled to begin today.
