Blind Pedestrian Struck by Car in Kendall Park

South Brunswick PoliceA 38-year-old Kendall Park man remains in critical condition this afternoon after being struck by a vehicle on Route 27 early this morning.

South Brunswick Police received a call at 4:39 a.m. from a 30-year-old driver from Kendall Park who said he was driving his 2007 Ford Fusion northbound on Route 27 near the Kendall Park Post Office when he struck something.

Officers arrived minutes later and found the victim in the roadway with serious injuries. The victim was transported by paramedics to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. The victim suffered a head injury, a broken pelvis, and a broken arm.

An investigation by the South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau determined that the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and walking diagonally across Route 27 with his back towards traffic. The victim, who is legally blind, was using his walking cane to cross the highway. The victim was walking towards the Walgreens at the time he was in the roadway. The driver of the vehicle was headed to work and was not speeding at the time of the crash. No charges have been filed as a result of the crash.

Route 27 was closed northbound until 8:30am.
