Leaf Art Exhibit Opens at D&R Greenway

The Olivia Rainbow Gallery of the D&R Greenway Land Trust is currently hosting an exhibition of art celebrating the leaves of autumn.

Watercolor monoprint autumn leaf art created by 5th and 6th graders at the Princeton Academy of the Sacred Heart is accompanied by leaf ceramics. The art pulses with scarlet, crimson, cerise and coral, as well as metallic copper and gold. Under the guidance of art teacher Gail Morford, Sacred Heart students included pink in both art forms in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Morford had students explore the Academy campus — gathering leaves, sketching, taking notes, keeping weather observations, following in Thoreau’s observant footsteps. Her art curriculum involves the study of historical fine art movements, as well as learning of individual artists of past and present. Mary Cassatt was the inspiration for the monoprints. Students began by painting a leaf, then pressing art paper against the wet paint, resulting in a virtual blizzard of leaves. The painted clay sculptures are also based upon leaves gathered on the Academy’s 50-acre Great Road campus.

Gallery hours: business days through Nov. 24. The exhibition is free and open to the public. D&R Greenway, One Preservation Place, Princeton 08540.  www.drgreenway.org   609-924-4646.

The D&R Greenway’s Olivia Rainbow Gallery is funded by Chris and Leslie Kuenne in memory of their daughter. Cherishing art and nature, the 4-year-old was a budding artist.
