Just before 9 p.m. tonight, the Lawrence Township Police Department arrested a Trenton man for the carjacking of a 77-year-old woman.

Robert McClain, 47, of the 800 block of Greenwood Avenue in Trenton allegedly threw the woman out of her car Monday afternoon after she loaded her groceries from the Acme at the Lawrence Shopping Center and sat down in the driver’s seat. He demanded her keys and she resisted.  He then fled the scene in her 2013 Kia Rio.

Sgt. James Smith observed a vehicle matching the victim’s stolen 2013 Kia in the parking area of Avalon Apartments in Lawrence Township Tuesday night. The vehicle was confirmed to be a match, and surveillance of the vehicle was set up. After several hours of
surveillance, McClain was observed walking to the vehicle and preparing to enter the car when he was taken into custody by Officer Ryan Dunn, Sgt. James Smith and Detective Sgt. Joseph Lech without incident.

McClain was in possession of the victim’s car keys and a white plastic bag containing the victim’s handbag, police said. He is being charged with carjacking, receiving stolen property and theft. Bail has not been set yet.

  1. Bravo, great police work. Hopefully, this vile cowardly felon will be put away for a long time.

  2. I hope we can all agree that this coward should be cuffed by the police when taken into custody.

    1. The concern from a few weeks ago was that arrest warrants shouldn’t be issued for fines arising from non-criminal non-violent offenses. No one suggested that we shouldn’t be arresting people who commit violent crimes. As a lawyer, you know the difference.
