Mayer, 52, was struck by a car around 6:15 a.m. Tuesday while jogging with his dog near his home on Robbinsville-Edinburg Road.

A senior at Robbinsville High School was heading south on Robbinsville-Edinburg Road near Mayer’s home just before sunrise at 6:12 a.m. when she struck Mayer and his dog, law enforcement officials said. The Robbinsville Township Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office are still investigating the incident.

All Robbinsville schools will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and all after-school activities are cancelled, school district officials said in a statement. Grief counseling will be offered to students, school district staff members, and community members Tuesday afternoon in the commons area.

“With a heavy heart, we share with you devastating news that our beloved Dr. Steven Mayer, Superintendent of Schools passed away this morning from a tragic accident,” a message to the community on the school district’s website read this morning. “As a community, we ask that you keep the Mayer Family in your thoughts and prayers.”

A candlelight vigil is also scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Foxmoor Community Park on Washington Boulevard. Any flowers or other memorial tokens should be dropped off at the park, officials said.

Mayer was known for his broad smile and his upbeat attitude. Dozens of students and community members mourned his loss on social media this morning as news of his death spread in Robbinsville, West Windsor, Plainsboro and beyond. A longtime educator in Mercer County, Mayer was the principal at Grover Middle School in West Windsor before he worked in Robbinsville.

“Robbinsville lost a great guy today, I’ve never met a more genuine and kindhearted person,” wrote Kyle Alston.

“My prayers are with the family of our wonderful superintendent. Robbinsville,” wrote Ashley Stamboulian. “We will miss your smile and positivity.”

Mayer leaves behind a wife who is a teacher in the Robbinsville district and three sons.
