Princeton Area Community Foundation Awards $84,660 in College Scholarships

The Princeton Area Community Foundation has awarded scholarships totaling $84,660 to students for the 2016-17 school year.

More than $38,000 was awarded to 13 high schools seniors who will be heading off to college this fall. The foundation renewed another $46,260 worth of scholarships for 14 college students who will return to classes in September.

“These students represent the best of our region’s young people,” said Jeffrey Vega, President and CEO of the Community Foundation. “We want to congratulate them for their achievements in high school and wish them success as they begin their college careers.”

Scholarships were awarded to students at the following schools:

Trenton Central High School

Qureasia Troupe-Mekins, The College of New JerseyLion Woodward Educational Fund / Rotary Club of Trenton, 4-year award, $2,500 per year, awarded to a high school senior from Mercer or Bucks Counties, who demonstrates academic achievement, exemplary community service, and leadership.

Hamilton School District

Danielle Barbara Swierczyna, Steinert High School, SUNY OneontaMary Elliott Wislar Memorial Scholarship Fund, 2-year award, $6,000 per year; awarded to a Mercer County high school senior who has exhibited leadership.

Jose Moran, Hamilton West, Mercer County Community CollegeJohn R. and Shirley I. Forrest Memorial Scholarship, 4-year award, $5,000 per year; awarded to a Hamilton High School West senior based on community service, achievement and character.

Princeton High School

Edgar Morales, University of PittsburghGreater Mercer Scholarship Fund, 1-year award, $2,000; awarded to a Mercer County High School senior who has demonstrated a strong commitment to community service over several years; made possible by The Frank Clark Memorial Fund and the Bethany Scholarship Fund.

Cheyenne Setneska, Stockton University  – Lion Woodward Educational Fund / Rotary Club of Trenton, 4-year award, $2,500 per year, awarded to a high school senior from Mercer or Bucks Counties, who demonstrates academic achievement, exemplary community service, and leadership.

West Windsor-Plainsboro High School South

Rachel Julius, University of Maryland and Kathryn Schoenauer, University of Pennsylvania – Princeton Post No. 76, American Legion Dr. Henry J. Frank Scholarship, 4-year award, $1,000 per year; awarded to a Princeton, West Windsor Township or Plainsboro high school senior who is a descendant of a person who served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

Point Pleasant Borough High School

Abigail Byington, Pace University – Sandra M. Glazier Memorial Scholarship Fund, 4-year award, $5,000 per year; awarded to an Ocean or Monmouth County high school senior with a parent who has been or is afflicted with cancer, or who is battling cancer him or herself.

Voorhees High School

Sarah Malzberg, Georgetown University – Frank, Ada, and Elizabeth Compton Scholarship, 1-year award, $4,450, awarded to students who build social capital within their school and/or between their school and community.

North Hunterdon High School

Sarah Kim, Lehigh University – Frank, Ada, and Elizabeth Compton Scholarship, 1-year award, $4,450, awarded to students who build social capital within their school and/or between their school and community.

 

Cranford High School

Jakub Iwaniuk, St. John’s University – Macklin Soccer Scholarship, 1-year award, $1,000; awarded in honor of Paul Brown and William R. Ray for their dedication to the students in the varsity soccer program at Cranford High School.

Caroline Elmer, Purchase College – State University of New York  – Macklin World Language Scholarship 1-year award, $1,000; awarded in honor of Donato Zoppi, who taught World Language at Cranford Public Schools for 30 years.

Collingswood High School

Emma Oehlers, University of the Arts in Philadelphia – Michael McGarry Skowronek Scholarship, 2-year award, $2,500 per year, awarded to a Collingswood High School senior based on achievement and character.
