A crash on Route 1 involving a jack-knifed tractor trailer that was carrying a boat caused extensive morning rush hour delays on Thursday.

The crash took place on Route 1 south near Sand Hills Road. Police said the tractor trailer slowed for approaching traffic and the heavy load caused the tractor to jack-knife and strike a vehicle.

The tractor trailer, a 1987 Kenworth, was driven by Peter Stamm, 49, of Stonington, Conn. The tractor was in the right lane of Route 1 south and had just passed the crest of the highway at Sand Hill Road. The driver applied his brakes, but the weight of the boat on the flatbed he was pulling continued to move forward. The tractor jack-knifed and struck a 2008 Volvo in the left lane that was driven by Christine Foy, 27, of Hoboken. Foy’s vehicle then struck a 2013 Nissan in front of her that was driven by Chirayu Patel, 32, of Edison.

The crash caused the fuel tank of the tractor to rupture. The Kendall Park Fire Department and Middlesex County Hazardous Material Team contained the spill. South Brunswick Emeregency Medical Services responded to the scene. All three drivers declined medical attention.

The crash was reported at 7:40 a.m. and caused the southbound lanes to be closed for two hours. There were extensive delays throughout the morning commute. The New Jersey Department of Transportation assisted with rerouting traffic., police said.
