Five Princeton Area Non-profits Receive New Jersey Council for the Humanities Grants

The New Jersey Council for the Humanities has awarded $151,097 in grant funding to nine organizations that will provide humanities programming for the residents of New Jersey over the next year.

Grant winners:

Arts Council of Princeton ($10,000) – to investigate and preserve the history of the Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood of Princeton, the historically African American community in Princeton that dates back to the 18th century.

McCarter Theatre Center ($20,000) – to support the commission, research period, and public reading of seven short plays by contemporary playwrights based on historical accounts brought to light by researchers associated with the ongoing Princeton and Slavery project.

People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos, Inc. ($14,300) – for a short story reading and discussion program in English and in Spanish designed to invite new humanities audiences to the critical enjoyment of literature.

Sourland Conservancy ($20,000) –  in support of the creation of the Stoutsburg Sourland African American Museum at the site of the Mt. Zion AME Church in Skillman.

Thomas Edison State University Foundation ($19,797) – for two discussion-based public workshops, focusing on soldier reintegration, that employ history, literature, and philosophy to educate and ease veterans’ physical and psychological burdens.

The George Street Playhouse ($20,000) – for a community-based initiative that will explore issues of race and social justice in connection with the production of “American Son.”

The Holocaust and Human Rights Center at Middlesex County College ($20,000) – for a project that includes a lecture/discussion series, mini-memorial museum, and outreach program using the lessons of history to combat human rights abuses.

The Newark Museum Association ($20,000) – for public programming in support of “Native Artists of North America,” a reinstallation of the museum’s Native American collection in a new location adjacent to the American Art galleries.

Two River Theater ($7,000) – for the creation of a series of programs created in conjunction with military and veteran families in support of their production of “The Women of Padilla.”

The council awards action grants up to $20,000 to implement or expand programs, and incubation grants up to $5,000 for projects aimed at experimentation, research, prototyping, and examining new program models and topics.
