Princeton Day School chess team ​wins first place at NJ Elementary Competition

The Princeton Day School Chess Elementary team places first place in the New Jersey Primary, Elementary and Junior High Championship. From left to right, 5th graders Eric Wu (Princeton) and Aadi Shankar (Skillman), 6th grader Winston Ni (Princeton), and 2nd grader Eric Jiang (West Windsor).​

The elementary players for the Princeton Day School chess team took first place in the New Jersey Primary, Elementary and Junior High Championship on Feb. 26 at Brookdale College in Lincroft.

Twelve players competed in the primary division, taking home five place trophies and second place as a team. Kindergartener Kevin Long was 14th overall in the primary, while grade awards were won by Dhruv Nair, Elijah Morris, Gio Juarez and Jay Srinivas.

In elementary K-6, sixth grader Winston Ni was second, fifth grader Eric Wu was 6th, fifth
grader Aadi Shankar was 10th, and Eric Jiang took first place in second grade. Dodge Martinson
was fourth in junior high with four wins out of five games.

The primary team members were Dhruv Nair, Elias Nicozisis, Elijah Morris, Gio Juarez, Jay
Srinivas, Jay Turchetta, Kevin Long, Mihir Karande, Shaan Srinivas, William
Broeker, and Yalong Zhang.

Princeton Day School chess players also competed at the first-ever New York State Girls Team and Individual Championships, a two-day tournament held at the Hewitt School in New York City on February 25 and 26. Third grader Rowan Field placed 12th and her sister Lila Field placed 16th in the K-3 championship section. The PDS girls were 3rd place team. In K-3 Under 600, first grader Anya Jha won four out of five games to place 8th and top scoring player grade 1 or below. Second grader Shreya Munjal won her first rated game.
