Another train derails at New York Penn Station

For the second time in less than two weeks, a train derailed at New York Penn Station, shutting down service in and out of  New York for several hours on Monday morning. One person was injured during the rush hour incident.

The cause of the accident was not immediately known. A New Jersey Transit spokesman said a train from Trenton was carrying about 1,200 passengers when it went off the rails at 9 a.m. New Jersey Transit services were suspended into and out of Penn Station. Witnesses said the train shook before stopping. One witness told Reuters a broken wheel was visible from inside the car. The Federal Railroad Administration said it also was opening an investigation of the derailment and sending a team of inspectors to Penn Station.

On March 24, an Amtrak Acela train derailed and side-swiped a New Jersey Transit commuter train at Penn Station.

Limited service in and out of New York resumed after 2 p.m. on Monday. Some trains were operating up to an hour behind schedule as of 4 p.m. The NJ Transit website lists the revised train schedules for Monday afternoon and evening.
