Rally against hate to be held this afternoon at Princeton University

Several student groups and campus organizations at Princeton University have joined together to host the”Rally for a Hate-Free Princeton” this afternoon, April 26. The rally, which is open to the wider community, will be held at 4 p.m. at Firestone Plaza in front of the main library on campus.

The coalition is holding the rally to counter the hate-speech flyers that recently were posted on campus buildings.

Racist and anti-Semitic flyers similar to ones distributed recently at other universities were found posted on some Princeton University buildings last week and were removed after school officials received a complaint about them.

The flyers included anti-immigrant, racist and anti-Semitic comments. They were found taped to a door at Stanhope Hall, to the main entrance of the Center for Jewish Life, to a Murray Dodge door, and in East Pyne Hall. Someone contacted the school’s department of public safety to report the fliers. The caller said a person wearing a ski mask and dark clothing was seen taping the fliers to doors.  The fliers listed the web address and phone number for a white nationalist organization.

Jessica Sarriot, one of the organizers of the rally, said students want to send a message that hate speech and hate crimes are not acceptable on campus.

“We want to be vocal and visible to say these things will not be tolerated,” she said. “We want to stand in solidarity with the full diversity of our community and emphatically show no licensing will be allowed for hate speech.”

Rally organizers include: Woodrow Wilson School Resisting Hate, Princeton Private Prison Divest, Intersecting Queer Identities, the Young Democratic Socialists of Princeton, Princeton Citizen Scientists, the Black Graduate Caucus, the Latino Graduate Student Association, Princeton Advocates for Justice, the Center for Jewish Life, and the Graduate Religious Life Council.
