Groundbreaking for Princeton solar project set for June 5

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new three-megawatt solar array at the site of a former municipal landfill on River Road in Princeton will be held on Monday, June 5.

The River Road solar array project has been in the works for several years, but was put on hold when the market for solar renewable energy certificates bottomed out.

Once the solar array is complete, it will supply an estimated 25 percent of the energy needs for the waste water treatment plant on River Road.  The solar array will be built on a capped landfill.

The project is a partnership between Princeton, the Stony Brook Regional Sewage Authority, Geopeak Energy and New Jersey Resources Clean Energy Ventures.

New Jersey Resources Clean Energy Ventures will own, operate and maintain the system, and lease the land from the municipality. The project is expected to be completed and in-service by the end of this summer.

Geopeak Energy, a Central New Jersey-based company, specializes in solar design, engineering, project financing, project management and construction. Using Geopeak’s design, Princeton was able to double the anticipated size of the solar project.
