Hopewell man struck and killed while walking on Route 29

An 87-year-old man from Hopewell Township was struck by a vehicle while walking on Route 29 just before 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.

John Crowley was walking southbound on Route 29 just south of Grant Street when he was hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck towing an enclosed trailer.

Crowley was transported to Capital Health Regional Medical Center by the Union Fire Company and Rescue Squad and paramedics from Capital Health. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The 1996 Chevrolet Pickup truck towing an approximately 20’ enclosed trailer was driven by Lambertville resident John Hunt, 47.

Crowley was walking southbound on the shoulder of the highway with his wife when for an unknown reason he entered the southbound lane. Hunt swerved left, attempting to avoid striking Crowley. The trailer hit him though.

The highway was closed between Route 546 and Church Road for about two hours.

The investigation ongoing. Anyone who witnessed the crash should call the Hopewell Township Police Department at (609)737-3100.
