Rutgers University officials approve 1.85 percent tuition and fee increase for 2017-18

The Board of Governors of Rutgers University has approved tuition and fee increases of 1.85 percent for the 2017-2018 academic year for in-state undergraduate students.

“Rutgers is committed to providing our students with the highest quality education,” said Sandy Stewart, chair of the Board of Governors. “Once again the university has been able to keep tuition and fee increases to a minimum while maintaining the top academic programs that Rutgers offers to New Jersey’s brightest students.”

This year’s increase of 1.85 percent is below the university’s 2.1 percent average tuition and mandatory fee increases of the last three years, school officials said.

“Public colleges and universities across the country are facing significant financial challenges,” said Rutgers University President Robert Barchi. “I am proud that Rutgers has been able to keep these cost increases to a minimum while continuing its commitment to teaching, research and service.”

A typical in-state, full-time arts and sciences undergraduate at Rutgers University-New Brunswick will be charged $14,638 in combined tuition and mandatory student fees in 2017-2018 as a result of the increase. For such a student living on campus, total charges (tuition, fees, room and board) will increase to $27,090, up 1.7 percent from last year.

Rates will increase by similar percentages for undergraduates at Rutgers University-Camden, to $14,501 for tuition and fees and, for those living on campus, to $26,594 for total charges, and at Rutgers University-Newark, to $14,085 for tuition and fees, and $27,349 including room and board.

Tuition, fee, room and board charges at Rutgers vary across the university’s colleges and schools. Tuition increases at Rutgers, with a $4.39 billion budget in 2017-2018, are driven by increasing expenditures, primarily personnel salaries, and moderated by any increased appropriations in the annual state budget, school officials said.
