McCarter Theatre managing director accepts job in San Diego

Timothy Shields, McCarter Theatre Center’s managing director since 2009, is leaving Princeton for a top post at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California.

Shields will begin his new job as managing director of the Old Globe Theatre in October.

Shields praised McCarter’s staff in his announcement about his departure, saying they “have been professional in every sense of that word, hard-working, and unfailingly dedicated to the production of world-class theater and presenting world-class artists.”

Artistic director Emily Mann said she is grateful for Shields’ leadership and vision during challenging economic times.

“He leaves our theater stronger than he found it in every way, and I wish him only the best on his exciting next chapter,” she said.

Board president Leslie Kuenne thanked Shields for the opportunity to work with him and for his leadership strengthening the theater’s operations and staffing. She described his new appointment as “a great opportunity for Tim to be in a wonderful theater in a wonderful location.”

The McCarter board will begin a national search for a new managing director immediately, with assistance from the search firm Management Consultants for the Arts.

Shields previously served  as McCarter’s business manager and general manager from 1983 to 1992, His professional experience includes serving as managing director of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and the Geva Theatre Center in Rochester, New York. He holds a bachelor’s degree of fine arts in drama production from Carnegie Mellon University in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
