All clear at Princeton University after unconfirmed report of gunman received (updated)

Princeton University issued an alert late this morning telling students, faculty and staff to shelter in place after school officials received a report that there was a gunman on campus. Law enforcement officials investigated the matter and issued an update shortly after noon assuring people that there is no gunman.

University officials issued the alert after a security guard at the Princeton University Art Museum spotted a man with a gun who turned out to be a police officer. The officer was escorting a tour group.

The police officer, from a jurisdiction outside Mercer County, was with a group of teenagers in an exchange program who were touring the museum’s galleries. The officer, who did not alert Princeton University officials to his presence in advance, was not wearing a uniform but was wearing a badge and had the gun in a holster.

Police officers from the municipality responded and talked with the officer, who was cooperative. The gun was never removed from the holster, officials said.
