Princeton resident Paul Josephson, a partner at Duane Morris LLP, has been appointed as a senior adviser and transition counsel to Governor-elect Phil Murphy’s transition committee.

Josephson most recently served as Murphy’s campaign counsel.

“Having represented the governor-elect since he announced his candidacy, it is an honor to now assist him in the transition effort,” Josephson said in a statement about the appointment.

He will assist the transition team in a review of more than 50 independent New Jersey authorities, including gaming and related authorities, four bi-state transportation authorities including the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, transportation authorities including NJ Transit and the DMV, and economic development and financing authorities.

“The independent authorities play a key role in New Jersey infrastructure, economic development, and gaming policy,” Josephson said in the statement. “They are responsible for some of the most visible government projects and services that residents and businesses count on.  I look forward to helping the governor-elect assume responsibility for them.”

A litigation and regulatory partner in Duane Morris’ trial practice group, Josephson was chief counsel to Governor Jim McGreevey in 2003. He served as the director of the New Jersey State Attorney’s General Division of Law an as an assistant attorney general in 2003 and 2004. He also served as chief of authorities for the McGreevey administration, overseeing 50 bi-state and state authorities. During his tenure, he is credited with helping merge the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, fixing New Jersey’s broken electronic tolls system and vehicle inspection system, finding financing strategies for major infrastructure projects, and implementing electronic voting and registration technologies.

Josephson presently serves as New Jersey co-chair of the Regional Plan Association. He is the president of the board of trustees at the Princeton Charter School, is a trustee of the New Jersey Charter School Association, and is a past chairman of the administrative law section of the New Jersey Bar Association. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science and government from the University of Michigan and his law degree from George Washington University.
