Theater To Go and Kelsey Theatre are proud to present “A Lovesong for Miss Lydia” by the late Don Evans in honor of Black History Month.

Theater To Go continues its Salute to NJ Playwrights at Kelsey Theatre with A Lovesong for Miss Lydia, by the late great Off-Broadway playwright and scholar Don Evans of Trenton NJ.

A Lovesong for Miss Lydia is the story of Lydia Frazier, an elderly widow and a pillar of her church, who is living out her life with quiet dignity in her modest home, until she decides to take in a boarder, the charming and apparently unscrupulous Mahlon, who loses no time in working his wiles on his trusting, vulnerable landlady, despite the cautious warnings of her well-meaning friends. Directed by Ruth Markoe, it stars Mimi B. Francis as Lydia, Kyle Moore as Mahlon, Todd Evans as Ostell, and Karen Hilton as Sarah.

The Creative Team includes Rachel Jenkins (Stage Manager), Christine Heffron (Asst Stage Manager) Ian Smith (Set Design) Jackson Siegel ( Lighting design) Eric Collins ( Sound Design) and Mellissa Rittmann (Costumes)

Don Evans was a prolific playwright and member of the Black Arts movement of the 1960s and 70s. He focused on the African-American experience and was department chair of African American studies at the College of New Jersey which named their black box theater after him. He also taught at Princeton and Rutgers over the years. He was a founder of Trenton’s Players Company.
A Lovesong for Miss Lydia is considered one of his most poignant works.
Mr.Evans passed away in 2003 and we honor his legacy with this production. Joining us in this production is Don Evan’s eldest son Todd Evans in the role of Ostell. Todd is the founder of Don Evans Players of Willingboro, named after his father in an effort to continue Mr. Evans’ legacy and commitment to community theater and the arts.
