World music journalist Banning Eyre, describes Garifuna music as having “mysterious Afro-Caribbean roots, with West African rhythms, a Latin lilt and flavors of reggae and calypso. At the core is a unique language and poetic tradition, focused on the hard lives of disempowered people who live at the mercy of the sea.”
Aurelio is known for his vibrant and captivating musical performances. He has dedicated his talent, vision, and charisma to ensuring that the Garifuna tradition survives, and this is evident in his songs as well as his stage presence. “I know I must continue the culture of my grandparents, of my ancestors, and find new ways to express it,” he says. “Few people know about it, but I adore it, and it’s something I must share with the world.”
Concert-goers are encouraged to come early and enjoy the beautiful outdoor setting and amphitheater at Pettoranello Gardens. The concert series is presented to the community by Blue Curtain and Princeton Recreation Department.
Blue Curtain continues on Saturday, July 18 at 7:00 p.m. with a double bill featuring the Sacred Steel Guitars of The Campbell Brothers and guitar wizard Michael Gregory Jackson.
