At age 27, alone in Jerusalem in the wake of a painful divorce, Kurshan joined the world’s largest book club: learning daf yomi — a “daily page” of the Talmud, a book of rabbinic teachings spanning 600 years and all the codes of Jewish law. By the time she completed the Talmud seven years later, Kurshan was remarried with three young children. She describes love and loss, marriage and motherhood, and learning to put one foot in front of the other by turning page after page.
Ilana Kurshan is the granddaughter of TJC founders Phyllis and Jerry Kurshan z”l, and is the book review editor of Lilith magazine.
